./configure problem

I attempting to install 2.0.3 on 2.6 Solaris.  I'm just starting with
Samba so any help at all would be great.   When I issue the command
./configure I receive the following error message:

loading cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... cc
checking whether the C compiler (cc -O ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
cannot create executables.
