OS/2 HPFS doesn't like "\\*"

I want to use smbtar (Samba 1.9.18p10 from RH5.2) to back up an OS/2
HPFS partition, and HPFS FindFirst considers "\\*" to be an invalid
filespec. Looking at dos_clean_name() in util.c, it looks like I should
just be able to collapse double-backslashes to single backslashes at
the end of the routine, after "\.\" strings have been collapsed. Any
reason why this won't work or might be a Bad Thing?

What does this code look like in the new release?
