Too many smbd processes

Why do I have 22 smbd processes running when smbstatus shows only three users?
Can or should I try to limit the number of processes?  Will it cause trouble as 
this system gets more use?

There is only one nmbd process.  I have hundreds of WinNT 4.0SP3 systems in the 
domain but I cannot imagine that any would need a smbd process until they 
attempt to login.
