Yep, the Application_Serving.txt in the ./doc directory helped me
putting the correct permissions on the share but didn't solve the 
probling. The solution was that MSword user templates should be changed
to point to local templates on your NT machine. The workgroup templates
can point to those on the samba share.
This seemed to have solved my problem for now.
