Access Database SLOW

I've got a user that wants an Access database shared out. I've got a decent
machine serving out the directory (300 MHz Pentium II) running RedHat 5.0
(kernel 2.0.34) with Samba 1.9.17p4 (RPM is samba-1.9.17p4-3). I've created
a simple share entry in the smb.conf file:

[global]
   debug level = 1
   browsable = yes
   comment = Samba under Linux (RedHat 5.0)
   domain master = yes
   guest account = samba
   load printers = yes
   log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
   lock directory = /var/lock/samba
   os level = 33
   password level = 1
   preserve case = no
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /etc/printcap
   share modes = yes
   short preserve case = no
   workgroup = ocala-cim

[spc]
   comment = SPC
   create mask = 0776
   path = /home/spc
   printable = no
   public = yes
   writable = yes

The directory contains two files: spc.ldb and spc.mdb which is only 805K in
size. On a NT and a NetWare server it works fine, almost instantaneous
response. When served via Samba it take almost 30 seconds to get the
database up, and then that long again for each of the various forms and
such.

Any pointers would be appreciated.
