Why all these Samba errors when connecting via OS/2?

Although I am able to to get access to the Samba (v1.9.17p4) shares on my
Linux-based server, the thoughput to/from my OS/2 (Warp4) client is
terrible.  Both the initial connections at bootup and any subsequent I/O to
shared drives are noticably slower than when connecting from a Win95
machine.

I restarted Samba with debug level #3, then immediately rebooted my OS/2
system.  Below is a dump of log.nmb which contains a lot of errors (names
not found, etc.).  The log file shown below was copied immediately after the
successful logon.  Why are there so many failed attempts which eventually
succeed?

Some background information:

        SOLAR = server machine name (IP addr 192.168.0.1)
        STEVE = my user name
        MERCURY = my machine name (IP addr 192.168.0.2)
        SNYDERNET = workgroup name

        All machines are identified via the hosts file (not DNS or DHCP).
