smbstatus memory fault core dump

It seems that since 1.9.18 that I have this problem. smbstatus will work
for the first few lines just fine but the list of the files isn't right.
It just runs on and on... like below:

hundreds or more lines like these then Memory fault core dump.

The system is SCO 5.0.2. Compiled with the Skunkworks97 gcc compiler.
Options in the Makefile are:

CC     = gcc
FLAGSM = -DSCO -DSecureWare -DEVEREST -DUSE_MMAP
LIBSM  = -lprot -lcurses -lcrypt -lsocket -lPW -lm -lx -lc_s -lc
LIBS1 = -L/lib


The gcc reports as gcc version 2.7-95q4.

So does anyone have clues on what is happening?? It was working fine
under the 1.9.17 versions.
