write list

What do I need in smb.conf to allow only a particular group write access to
that share?
I've tried 
[public]
   comment = Public Stuff
   path = /data/data
   public = yes
   writable = no
   printable = no
   write list=staff

I've also tried "write list=@staff"

Can anyone help?  Thanks.
