logon scripts

I was playing with logon scripts today and I was wondering something.

I had my logon scripts defined as %G\%U.bat

to decrease administration I tried 
logon script = global.bat %U %G
trying to pass variables to the batch file.

why does this not work.

When I do it NO logon script runs under win95.

When I take off the  %U %G then the script runs.

is their anyway to pass these parameters to the script? 
and if not why not?
