Samba server and netscape mail

Briefly, My home directories and consequently my Netscape mail directories
are on Samba volumes.  All works well except when I delete old mail I get an 
error message:

"The System was trying to transfer file data from buffers to
\Device\LanmanRedirector\<MY SAMBA SERVER>\<MY HOME DIR>\Netscape\Mail\inbox.
The write operation failed and only some of the data may have been written to 
the file."

Has anyone else seen this?  If so, do you know what causes this and have you
any fix?
