Yes, that's exactly what it is for.  

I've been checking google for references to real-world users
(essentially the world's mailing list and forum archives), and it seems
to die out pretty hard after 2008 (and is scarce regardless).

Letting it go certainly would reduce a lot of complexity in pdb_ldap, so
you have my +1.  Naturally, we will make sure we announce it to our
users, so any last remaining users have some time to consider their
migration.
