Samba3 to Samba4 Migration

I don't currently have samba3, but I do have OpenLDAP with UNIX 
crypt-generated passwords.  So, do I understand correctly that if I 
create a samba3 server and point it to that LDAP back-end I can now 
migrate to Samba4 without having my users have to create all new passwords?
