I hope to progress with this patch series soon.  I'm not wedded to doing
this exactly how I've proposed - this is just created so we can talk in
concrete terms.  

I am interested in dealing with any real-world use cases that folks feel
are important, but I need to know what they are, so we can find the best
solution overall.
