upgrading samba4 gives samba3? or just confusion?

It might be something to do with old libs in /usr/local/samba.  Try
getting rid of all the binaries/libs/modules etc. from
/usr/local/samba (after doing a backup).  Then try the make install
again and see if that fixes it.
