Problem with async-echo test

What is the deeper reason behind the layer separation? This
used to work at some point, and some checkin in between
broke it. I did not do a git bisect, but I can certainly
nail it down to a single checkin with a little work if that
is required to find the deeper bug. I would propose to fix
that change in behaviour.
