Samba : New windows xp clients cant join samba domain

Hi all , weve been running samba on linux and everything was okay. But now
when trying to connect new windows xp clients to the damain using root you
get a logon failure message: unknown username or bad passwd.
when you telnet to the unix box you have no problems using the root
credentials .
Please assist
