Doing the Makefile generator is indeed not difficult. In fact, Thomas
has been following the discussion, and has done a proof of concept:

The difficulty would be the configure generator. I think that could be
a very difficult thing to write and to maintain. It is probably worth
a try, but let's not assume it is feasible until we have a working
prototype and we can see just how tricky it is.
