no, this is handled by the package manager. When you try to install a
RPM or a deb, it specifically checks for conflicting library
dependencies and refuses to install the package if it would lead to
conflicts.

It also ensures that the right dependencies are built into the
application binary and into the RPM and/or deb.

Having multiple libraries with different so numbers is completely and
utterly normal. It is not some special case that has to be handled
with kid gloves. It is NORMAL.

Just think about what Simo is implying. We change the ABI and we need
to go to a totally new package name. What sort of insanity is that??
