So, the issue here is that the kernel suddenly gained support for the
unix extensions, but didn't have a way to still override the uid/gid etc
permissions, which suddenly got grabbed from the (Samba) server. 

Dropping the unix capabilities was the quickest way back to the previous
behaviour.  

I think the cifs code has similar issues, but now accepts the
overrides.
