It would be a good idea to have some way to make sure this doesn't
break, e.g. a buildfarm host or something that builds with srcdir !=
builddir. We had this support earlier (done by Alexander), but it
regressed quickly after other build system changes.

There were portability problems with $< IIRC, I'm not sure what exactly
anymore but you might want to watch out for those when you commit the
patch.
