The current status of IPv6 and Samba is covered in my presentation from
SambaXP (see http://www.ipv6consultancy.com/ipv6blog/?p=8).
Samba4 IPv6 support is server side only and requires my IPv6 hack (see
http://www.ipv6consultancy.com/ipv6blog/?p=12).
Good progress on IPv6 has been made with the Linux CIFS client.
If you have any further questions please let me know. I am presenting an
update on IPv6 and Samba later this year and hopefully there will be more
progress before year end.
Regards,
David

This is a better question for samba-technical list, not the linux client
list.
Partial IPv6 support on the server is available in Samba 4, but not in any
version of Samba shipped by a distro that I am aware of. I am sure that we
would welcome attempts at adding this for Samba 3, if the patch were cleanly
written.
IPv6 support for CIFS is available in the current linux cifs client
(starting with cifs.ko version 1.49), but will be easier to use when some
small changes are made to the cifs mount helper (to allow for DNS to IPv6
host name lookups, rather than requiring the IPv6 address be specified on
the mount). This version of the client will likely eventually make its way
into distros, but that is a better question (ie the timing of their merge of
updated code) for the distributions' mailing lists.
