Vista RC2 doesn't like samba-3.0.10+ or 3.0.22+

Huh - that did the trick!
Looks like that implies some old ADS details about that (now) non-ADS
host remained in Active Directory, and unlike Win2000/WinXP clients,
Vista discovered that and changed the way it wanted to talk to the Samba
server - and failed. Sounds like Vista interrogates AD in some ways that
WinXP and prior don't.
Removing the old entry from Active Directory and either rejoining as
"server = DOMAIN" or as "server = ADS" now works with Vista as a client.
