Much as I (strongly) agree, this would mean dropping support for 
a few platforms - Stratos VOS and some of the other older unices. Is that 
an issue?

I agree. This is also one of the reasons why I think we should be
writing the (public) prototypes for our other Samba4 libraries ourselves 
(just like we already do for tdb and ldb).
