Volker,

I've made some more progress on this, and now most tests pass, but the
join tests fail. For some reason the password buffer encryption is
going wrong for tests like RPC-JOIN when we use sign or seal. Using
'connect' works fine. I'm not totally sure this is related to the
async rpc changes as I can't see a logical connection between the two
yet.

What I suspect is the session key information is getting lost. Can you
think of any reason why your changes would have affected that?
