It is necessary if you're using NFS, which has a hard coded number of
GIDs per user (16 ?), at least up to NFSv3.

It is necessary if using older programs in binary compatibility mode
which have hard-coded values for NGROUPS_MAX (?) compiled in.
(Newer applications should use something like sysconf(_SC_NGROUPS_MAX).)

Not all vendors have the flexibility of various Linux distros in
arbitrarily breaking backwards compatibility and requiring users to
recompile their applications...
