Ah....ok.  I get it now.  I think patches need to be cleaned up
a little usually anyways.  So verifying that they apply against
the actual release code is a good idea.  It's easy to have patches
that apply against the 3.0 svn tree but not the release code.

True.  We'l have to see how things work out long term.
