jagged transfer speeds

I have a tuning problem with samba-2.2.8a on solaris9, when copying data
from an xp
client to the samba server a utilization of approximately 70% is reached,
copying data from the server to
the client gives an utilization of ~40% with heavy fluctuations beetwen 20
- 70%

Doing the same transfers with ftp gives me about 9.5MB/s to the server and
8.8 from the server to the client,
during which the client is under heavy load.

The following is set in smb.conf

        socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF = 16384 SO_RCVBUF = 24576
        max xmit = 65535
        read raw = yes
        write raw = yes
