eDirectory passdb backend

I am in the process of creating a passdb backend to provide Novell
eDirectory authentication via ldap with eDirctory specific extensions. I
realize such a passdb backend module can be written and configured for
Samba 3.0.x without changes to Samba proper. Is it possible, and more
importantly acceptable, to write a passdb authentication module that is
'closed source' if no Samba code is modified and the module is
distributed separately?
