mangle characters (e.g. blank to underline)

Hi,

File names with blanks are not very useful in Unix scripts.
Our Windows users use very often (not allowed) blanks in file names.
So I am looking for a possibility to change blanks to underlines.
But mangled map = (*\ * *_*) does not work ?!?
Can any one help me
