This is an old version and has known buffer overflow bugs and there are 
know exploits out there. Please upgrade to 2.2.8a.

Have you started the Samba daemons? Can you contact the server at all? 
This suggests that smbclient cannot connect to the smbd on the server.

Do you have a packet trace.
