I am wondering whether a difference between server and DC permissions may 
play a role here.

As for WXP using multiple identities... Yeah, this is normal behavior for
Windows clients.  Some of the services (particularly IPC$ services)  
offered by servers were originally designed to be accessed anonymously or
via the guest account.
