hosts allow problem with ip names in 3.0.1rc1

I am seeing a problem in 3.0.1rc1 which wasn't in 3.0.1pre3, where if you
put an ip name in the hosts allow field eg.
 hosts allow = myhost.mydomain.com
access from that host is still denied
with the error
[2003/12/09 17:12:22, 0] lib/access.c:check_access(328)
  Denied connection from ___________(long line of about 900 _) +>
  _Connection denied from 10.10.10.10

Is anyone else seeing this or can reproduce it?
ip address configurations eg.
 hosts allow = 10.10.10.10
work as expected.
