While I understand your concerns very clearly, I have to say that 
preloading using a parameter is consistent with the way we do business in 
general.  Perhaps it is time to revisit the question of smb.conf structure 
and utility.  We seem to have outgrown smb.conf.

I am also concerned about the number of tools that are springing up to 
manage aspects of Samba.  If we want a real-time management tool, perhaps 
we should be looking at devising a general Samba Admin tool.  Something 
with varying levels of authority, perhaps, that could also be used as the 
back-end for SWAT.

Just thinklings...
