ok, lets ship it then for now, I'll do more tests and try to find out
what is really happening there.... 

ah.. w2k sp2 is important detail.....  had you w2k sp2 on your tests?

I have tested with acls and without -- no help. I do suspect nisplus pdb
just now -- subdirs under cached profiles have unresolved sids in
security tab....
