password chat times out

We''re testing Samba with Irix, and have a problem with the unix password
sync.  Samba attempts to sync the unix
       password when using smbpasswd, but times out.  The following info is
from smbpasswd with "chat debug" on
       and the other info is from the log file.  You can see the time out in
both.  Any clues on this one?
