libsmbclient and IP numbers

Hi

I try to open an connection with:

smbc_opendir("smb://netbiosname/); 

and everything works fine, but if I try 

smbc_opendir("smb://<insert IP here>/); it fails! Is this not supported? 

I went on trying, smbc_opendir("smb://<insert IP here>/sharename); and that did work!!

Im very confused, can someone please explain what's going on?
