Severe browsing problems

Hi Samba-technical!

I´m trying to solve a serious problem since the mid of last month.
I had subscribed to the mailing list samba at lists.samba.org, but haven´t
got any help from there. Finally I contacted Paul Green
<Paul.Green at stratus.com>
who adviced me to contact this mailing list. I hope, somebody can help now.

The problem is serious and concerns browsing.

What I use:

SOLARIS 8; SAMBA 2.2.2 (DEFAULT COMPILATION [gcc, vers. 2.95.3] AND
INSTALLATION).
WIN-BOXES (Workstations, no servers): WIN2K (NATIVE INSTALLATION AND SOME
WITH SP2); WINNT4; Win98
ALL MS-BOXES POINT TO THE SAMBA SERVER AS A WINS SERVER; This works fine.
As no any windows Server is included, I want to evolve the Samba server
also to a PDC.

PHYSICAL NETWORK
****************
VLAN (IP=131.130.193.*; NETMASK=255.255.255.192; BROADCAST=131.130.193.191;
GATEWAY=131.130.193.129). PROBLEMS WITH VLANs THAT ARE ADDRESSED
BY PAUL GREEN (WWW.SAMBA.ORG/DOCS/SAMBA 2.0.x TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE;
MS-KNOWLEDGEBASE Q190930) ARE NOT THE CASE IN MY VLAN BECAUSE

1. BROWSING WORKS FINE AS LONG AS THE SAMBA SERVER IS NOT AN LMB OR DMB OR
BOTH.
2. BROWSING DOES NOT WORK EVEN IN CASE THE SAMBA SERVER (CONFIGURED AS LMB
OR DMB OR BOTH) AND A WIN2K BOX ARE WIRED TOGETHER OVER A VLAN-ISOLATED
HUB. IN THIS CASE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN BOTH MASHINES WAS GRANDED BY
PINGING IN EITHER DIRECTION.

Somebody in the mailing list samba at lists.samba.org (subject: Re: samba as
local master browser does not supply a list; date 11.30.2001) claimed
similar problems that may be associated with incorrect permisions of
browse.dat. In my case, browse.dat contains the right information, that
unfortunately is not propagated by samba. Its permisions are: owner, group,
other =read; write is granded only to root.

Usually, I use two workgroups in the subnet: PET.UNIVIE and PETROLOGY. The
samba server should be a member of the latter. Before upgrading to samba
2.2.2, I have used samba 2.06 with no browsing problems. With samba 2.2.2
the typical situation is as follows:

The smb.conf file:

[global]
	workgroup = PETROLOGY
	netbios name = ZEUS
server string = Samba Server %v on %L
	encrypt passwords = Yes
	username map = /usr/local/samba/lib/usermap.txt
	log level = 3
	log file = /export/home/samba/logs/log.%m
	max log size = 50
name resolve order = wins host lmhosts bcast
	time server = Yes
	domain admin group = @ntadmins
	logon script = \\%L\netlogon\scripts\all.bat
	logon path = \\%L\Profiles\%U
	logon drive = H:
	logon home = \\%L\%U\.profile
	local master = true
	os level = 65
	preferred master = True
	domain master = True
	domain logons = True
	wins support = Yes
admin users = root, petra, administrator
	hosts allow = 131.130.193. 127.0.0.1

LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING DIALOG; FOR EXAMPLE ON AN WIN2K BOX
********************************************************
C:\>net view /domain:pet.univie
Server Name Remark
---------------------------------------------------------
\\ACHAT
\\ALBIT

\\GABBRO
\\GRANIT
\\KORUND
\\OPAL
\\PENNIN
\\PW2400
\\STONE

The command completed successfully.

BUT FOR PETROLOGY WHERE SAMBA BELONGS TO:

C:\>net view /domain:petrology
There are no entries in the list.

HOWEVER,

C:\>nbtstat -a zeus
Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [131.130.193.136] Scope Id: []
           NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table
       Name Type Status
    ---------------------------------------------
    ZEUS <00> UNIQUE Registered
    ZEUS <03> UNIQUE Registered
    ZEUS <20> UNIQUE Registered
    ..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered
    PETROLOGY <00> GROUP Registered
    PETROLOGY <1B> UNIQUE Registered
    PETROLOGY <1C> GROUP Registered

    PETROLOGY <1E> GROUP Registered
    MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00

THE NEXT IS SURPRIZING:

C:\>net use x: \\zeus\install
The command completed successfully.

Log files at level 3 do not show any problems.

Are there any suggestions about this problem?
