Various people have provided valuable feedback on the evolving utmp code,
particularly Michail Vidiassov and Michel Jouvin. Many thanks.

There is now a new version (.3) of the patch which should fix the known
problems. In particular it should be a better base for:
o BSD-like systems (e.g. FreeBSD, SunOS 4) which have to access files
   directly;
o OSF (is AIX similar?) whose optimistic claims about utmpx belie the
   reality of an impoverished implementation.

Doubtless there are still bugs (possibly even new ones). The direct-file
implementation (typically BSD) is incomplete, and needs an enthusiastic
volunteer or two with access to such a system.

It is at:
   http://www.dur.ac.uk/~samba/utmp-207.patch (c. 116 kbytes)
   http://www.dur.ac.uk/~samba/utmp-207.patch.gz (c. 16 kbytes)
as of about 15:30 BST (14:30 GMT/UTC) Fri 5 May.

It affects files:
   configure.in
   acconfig.h
   configure <-- derived from configure.in
   include/config.h.in <-- derived from acconfig.h & configure.in
   smbd/connection.c

and should be installed against the official 2.0.7 distribution (not
against any previously patched version).

The vast majority of the patch is cosmetic line-number changes in
"configure", included for the benefit of those without (or unfamiliar
with) autoconf and autoheader.

Could the utmp enthusiasts try it and report problems to me, please.
