You might want to map UDP/137 and possibly UDP/138 through the NAT as 
well.  It *shouldn't* matter, but there may be NetBIOS name resolution 
problems without these.

Let me know if this works.  I've had people here at the U complain of 
similar symptoms.  They were trying to run smbd without running nmbd.  
I've asked them to run nmbd and let me know but I haven't heard back.

Do you have any Windows boxes inside the firewall?  Can they mount the
shares?
