configure problem

hello,

i have a problem using the configure script. i checked out the samba_2_2 
source via cvs. but after starting ./configure in the source directory 
it throws the following error:

./configure: line 10672: syntax error near unexpected token `<<<<<'
./configure: line 10672: `<<<<<<< configure'

i took a look at the script and encountered that this combination of < and 
> and = can be found more than one time...

i really cant imagine what these '<', '>' and '=' are for...
