RedHat PW CHANGE/SYNC - WORKS!

Hello All

   [Summary]
I now finally have password changing /AND/ password SYNC fully
working on my RedHat Linux Server.

I can successfully change PWs from both Win95/98 and NT clients.
(as long as the PW is 'suitable' [i.e. acceptable to PAM])

The problem on [some systems running??] RedHat Linux is a timing
problem. There were in fact 2 solutions.

   (1) Paulo Afonso Graner Fessel (pafessel at netsol.com.br) in an earlier
contribution suggesting using an alternative PW change utility.
This by-passes the chat sequence, (and hence the timing issue is
n/a). This works on the RPM installed SAMBA distribution.
However, when using our Win clients, an error was still returned
to the client (Incorrect Passord) even though the PW was changed.
(There may be a way to 'fix' this - I'm not a techno so I didn't
       know how).

    (2) The solution we're using was supplied by Doug Rintoul
(doug_rintoul at sil.org), which involved applying a simple addition
to 'smbpasswd.c' before compiling. (i.e. you can't use this with
        the ready rolled RPM's).
For us this meant the client gets the correct response
('Password Successfully Changed'), /and also/ that the original
password had to be supplied before the change was effected
(Both Impt for us as out clients are students).

Suggestion? who prepares the RedHat RPMs ? is it the SAMBA team?
how about considering this slight 'alteration' to the source
before rolling out the RPM's to help us non technos....

 Cheers!
 Hendrik
