the PAM module you are referring to is pam_ntdom, and it requires either a
samba server (which requires a ~/private/smbpasswd file) or an NT PDC
(which requires the _equivalent_ of a private/smbpasswd file).
in other words, you can't win: you _must_ use nt/lm 16 byte clear-text
equivalent hashes.
