È sicuramente un problema di chat, il chat script non è corretto.

Per verificare la correttezza di un chat script, semplicemente, esegui
il passwd program per cambiare la password e verifica che tutto l'output
che vedi corrisponda a ciò che hai messo in smb.conf

La domanda vera è: ma ti server realmente sincronizzare la password di
samba con quella degli utenti linux/unix ? Se gli utenti non devono
accedere in shell (o altri servizi autenticati) è più semplice lasciare
loro solo la password di samba e disabilitare la password unix (ed il
sync delle password in smb.conf).
