rsync every 15 min, lots of defunct processes, high iowait

Hello,

I'm rsyncing from one server to a backup server every 15 minutes. It works
for several days then the backup server gets up to 100% cpu usage, 96% of
that is iowait, and there are tons of rsync defunt processes, anyone have
any ideas?

I'm running RH ES 3 on a blade center with a fiber san.
