Strangeness with rsync

Hi all!
I've got a machine setup to be an "RSYNC Server", i.e. running rsync in
daemon mode waiting for connections from various other machines on my
network. This machine is running Debian Sarge and rsync 2.6.3.
For the past several days, I've been getting notices like this in my backup
logs:
============================================================================
=====
file has vanished:
"backup/archives/incoming/Augusta/1000-02/.cover-a.doc.3lL5YC" (in backup)
============================================================================
=====
The file in question seems to be random from day to day. Here's the odd
part, the file is there in both places (the source and the backup
locations). And they are identical and fully functional!
I don't know what is going on, but I'm hoping someone can help me decipher
this.
If it helps:
Command used by backup script:
rsync -a --stats --compress /source/file/path/
rsync.server::backup/backup/file/path/
Error captured from Standard Error stream:
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (4 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(359)
Thanks in advance,
