Unfortunately, this does not solve my problem, i.e., the following fix
in zlib-1.1.3 is not the one that rsync is triggering:

- fix "an inflate input buffer bug that shows up on rare but persistent
  occasions" (Mark)


At this point the workaround is to turn off compression.
