Using rsync to list ftp sites

I can't figure out how to use rsync to list the contents of ftp sites. Some ftp sites I know have rsync installed, and those I am able to list contents from using their DNS site name, but not the ip address. I know it is possible to copy files using rsync between different computers on the internet using for instance ftp, but how is that done?
