To make it clear, the text "list CLUG" thunderbird shows comes from my address-book
from the entry for "linux at lists.samba.org". If I remove this entry then thunderbird
does show the correct From: name. So it is thunderbird doing this.

Anyone knows a config value to control this behavior? Maybe I am just too slow but I did
do a number of net searches and sifted through the about:config attributes. Something to
say: "show name from "From:" header, do not look up in the address-book.
