Hi Paul if you haven't seen it yet you might like to check out
www.openenergymonitor.org for a software framework to log and display this
kind of data. Also they have some well established hardware for sensor
nodes that can include one-wire temperature probes and similar. It's quite
possible to roll your own arduino based sensor nodes too which can reduce
the cost.
