[clug] Mailing list providers

Hi all,

For a non-profit group I'm involved with, I'm looking to change the
"let's have a big bunch of emails" workflows into using mailing lists.
 Specifically, I have two use-cases:

1) An announcement list: anyone that wants to can subscribe, but only
a specific list of people can post to it (currently we have to use the
same email account with a big list of hand-collected addresses).

2) Discussion lists for smaller sub-groups: only authorised people can
sign up (or be registered for them), but then anyone that is
subscribed can mail to the list (this is for the various committees,
etc.)

Does anyone know of a good (preferably free in both senses of the
term!) mailing list provider that we can use with this? Most of the
ones I've found seem to either be publicly logged (which when dealing
with finance matters isn't ideal) or I'm not sure as to how reliable
or long-term the provider is (I'm going to spend long enough educating
people to use a specific mailing list without then telling them in a
years time that they have to use a different one).
